Wipro Point of Sale application testing solution has been developed to address some of the unique set of challenges in retail environment. Today more than 90% of the sales occur at a POS terminal; thus making it the most important touch point to collect customer data. This data acts as an input to several analytical software; thus influencing the future strategy of the retailer. Hence, retailers look for an application that can be adapted to frequent changes, and can be easily tested and deployed across all the locations.

Most retailers have moved on from monolithic legacy platforms to next-generation open-source POS applications. More often than not, they have well-defined test processes and test documentation. However, maintaining an updated test artifact repository in pace with the application changes is still a challenge with most of them. Thus, test cases exist as discrete entities; for every churn in the code, new test cases have to be designed from scratch. For regression tests, selecting right test cases from a bulky test repository is a time-consuming task, requiring a functional expert's intervention.
Wipro's POS application testing solution has been designed to achieve the following goals:
- Test coverage spanning across all critical business scenarios
- Transparent Requirement Traceability Matrix
- Optimized test suite
- Accelerated way to design new test cases and re-use existing ones
The solution itself has two entities:
- Product Entity - consisting of re-usable business process components
- Service Entity – consisting of services enabled by Wipro team of QA experts and POS experts
Product Entity
The Product entity is built on HP Quality Center's Business Process Testing (BPT) framework. It consists of 3 levels of re-usable ‘components'. They are –
• ARTS (Association for Retail Technology Standards) compliant functional requirements. The requirements are functionally grouped into sales and return, tendering, taxation etc.
• Business Process Components – Critical business process components have been derived out of the requirements. The components are encapsulated with design steps, expected results and input/output parameters.
• Test Cases – High level test cases have been designed to cover all critical business process scenarios of a typical POS application.
The BPT framework enables users to design a test case with a significantly reduced effort. It merely involves sequencing the business process components to reflect the logic of the process. The Wipro POS framework has 100+ such business process components, which can be re-used to form thousands of test scenarios depending on the target application. The test cases thus designed, also enable key-word driven automation.
